Let's talk self care
I am going to get on a soap box here for a bit, but it comes from a place of knowing. I know what it means to put yourself and your health on the back burner for awhile. I know what it is to barely be surviving. I know what it is to feel like you can barely make it through the day. For years I was on autopilot. I thought I thrived on being busy and always having something that needed my attention. What I didn't realize is that even though my life an my career at the time were based on living healthy, I was running myself into the ground creating one of the most unhealthy versions of myself. Stress was wreaking havoc on my body from the inside out. It took me getting really sick to come to terms with where I was at. For the lifestyle I lived I should have been able to rebound back from having COVID, but my body was in such a weakened state for so many reasons. Life came to a halt.
The lessons I learned during this season of life were priceless. I knew that if I was going to be able to truly help others, I needed to first take care of myself. No more dropping everything at a moment's notice. No more putting myself behind everyone else. I thought I was taking care of myself, but the truth is I was running on fumes. I did a good job of making it look like I was doing well. This is a common thing that can happen when you work in health, wellness and fitness. I was working out so I was taking care of myself. I was eating healthy so I was taking care of myself.
What I wasn't doing was listening to my body. I keep pushing through being tired. I was over caffeinating to make it through the day. I was running from appointment to appointment without down time. I was exhausted but kept telling myself I had to keep going. No matter how I felt, I put a smile on my face and kept charing ahead.
It makes my head spin when I look back on it. If I want to help people live healthy, I have to practice the self care I preach. Now, I am immersing myself in learning how to take better care of myself physically, mentally and spiritually. I have added in supplements that are helping my body heal. I continue to peel back the layers to find my healthy. I have had a great support system to lean on during my what we can call my "educational phase." I listen to my body and what it is telling me. I pay attention to any symptoms I have and what they may mean. I have evaluations done to let me know if what I am doing is working. I have found tools that allow me to help myself and those around me.
Currently I am doing a lymphatic detox for my body. Our lymphatic system is so vital and so many of us ignore it. I have learned to take a deep breath when it seems like there is too much. I have learned to say no. I have learned to prioritize. I have learned so much more about myself which allows me to better serve those around me.
